Nomadic herders live in small family groups. In most families I visited there was a child or two, the parents, grandparents and occasionally an aunt or uncle. Their days are spent on life sustaining activities such as watching and tending their animals, making felt, milking cows and mares, preparing food and collecting animal dung.

Their 'Ger' homes are warm and cosy circular tents, which insulate against extreme temperatures. Inside it is modest and functional with a central fire used for cooking. The walls are lined with beds and usually a sideboard adorned with family photos and horse-riding or wrestling trophies.

Everyone rides a horse or camel from the age of four - these are work animals. Sheep and goats provide food and wool, which is used for clothing and housing materials.
